Greek letters appreciation post!
1) Prytaneion of Priene, Priene, Ionia, Turkey 180 BCE
2) Gate of Mazaeus and Mithridates. Ephesus, Turkey 40 CE
The fact that the Greek letters look the same as the modern ones and the fact I can undertsand most of the things written causes me SHIVERS, man! Gosh, I love my language!
EYTYXEITE 😁
Great post! OK something fun: since many foreign people are wondering how similar ancient and modern Greek are, as an average Greek that followed non-lingual studies, I will attempt to translate as much as I can discern without help.
Here I should note that both scripts are after 200 BC and before 50 AD which means we should probably be talking about very late Ancient Greek and mostly Early Koine (aka Biblical, proto-Byzantine) Greek.
1. So okay in the first one it’s very hard to spot the words but here are the words I get:
the most brilliant…of the young…city… will (or parliament) and the friendly respectful and… of the old wise men (who are most likely the judges or the rulers) honoured during many times that it……considering-ed or thought out or well thought (dunno)… Lord of the city.. Mauritianus B’ son of Efsch(????)….in the agoras and the festivals of lady of the city goddess Athena and protector of God and first leader and according to the will of the lords wreath crowned. Rejoice!
So okay I think the general meaning is that this is a glorifying script for the lord of a prosperous city and the city itself (he’s probably an archpriest of Athena or Athena is the patron god of the city or both).
2. Many words are out of frame otherwise this would be easier than the first.
Virtue. Fortune. Of the Cavalry Order respected friend (out of frame) and merciful he (maybe “dressed” if there is a variation in the dictation) all the ??? (probably women, half of it OOF, but there might be a grammatical inconsistency / variation if it’s indeed just “women”), he (half verb OOF)… sixty men.
So this is according to OP the Gate of Mazeus and Mithridates so this could be a burial script for either of them???
I don’t know how well I did with the interpretations but I believe the roots and etymology of the worlds are fairly accurate. Add on if you have other interpretations, info or such!
P.S Tumblr app is bs, I hope the new update is better
